Optimization of treatment of joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis has been the subject of systematic study of V. Kumar (2005). Effects of different types of pulsed magnetic fields were compared on the animal model.

Thanks to factorial arrangement, this study was able to determine the optimal combination of frequency, intensity and duration of treatment with sine waves of pulsed magnetic field.

Pulsed magnetic therapy with parameters 5 Hz and 4 μT and duration of 90 minutes proved to be most effective for the reduction of swelling and slowing disintegration of the surrounding tissue by reducing the activity of lysosomal enzymes.

Increased lysosome activity generally tends to worsen degradation of some proteins. Particularly in rheumatoid arthritis and other chronic inflammatory diseases, lysosomal enzymes may get to the extracellular space and thus damage the surrounding tissue.

Reduction of swelling of soft tissues was confirmed by radiological examination in this study. Moreover, results of histological examination confirmed decrease of inflammatory cells and also proliferation and enlargement of cells within the joint (hyperplasia and hypertrophy of cells surrounding synovial membrane).

According to this study, pulsed magnetic therapy has stabilizing effect on the tissue lining inside the joint and is therefore appropriate in treatment of patients whose joints are affected by rheumatoid arthritis.
