Extensive analysis of the effectiveness of knee osteoarthritis treatment with low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy was conducted in 2014 (Sit et al.) on 9 carefully selected randomized controlled trials with a total of 483 patients. Pulsed magnetic therapy was compared both to placebo and pulsed fields of high frequency (27 MHz).
The authors decided for this analysis because osteoarthritis is one of the most common medical conditions affecting the elderly. Another reason was the fact that low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy has repeatedly shown that it can stimulate the growth of cartilage at the cellular level.
Total of 9 randomised controlled trials qualified for this meta-analysis through the Oxford quality scoring system. Basically, they were selected primarily on the basis of the quality of the methodological approach. Sufficient diversity of selected patients and degree of bias were also among important factors.
The results of all 483 patients, who were included in this analysis, demonstrate significant positive effects of pulsed magnetic therapy – 77% success rate. At the same time, the results suggest that the optimal duration of treatment vary for each patient so it should therefore be determined individually for even higher efficiency.
This analysis confirms conclusively that low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy effectively improves quality of life and physical health of patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis, even though alleviation of pain is not guaranteed in all cases.
This analysis also showed that high frequency magnetic fields do not offer any beneficial effect in this case.
