Action potential in isolated sciatic nerve was dealt with by Ö. Coskun and his team in their study. The immediate effects of a 30-minute pulsed magnetic field application with 50 Hz frequency and 1 mT intensity were examined in animal model. The results were compared to a control group and showed surprising effects.
Action potential is a brief moment in which the membrane potential of the cell quickly increases and decreases as it processes the signal to maintain the voltage difference between the internal environment of the cell and the external environment. Action potentials of neurons are also known as nerve impulses.
The maximum amplitude, hyperpolarization phase and action potential were, based on the results of this study, significantly lower in the group that received pulsed magnetic therapy.
The use of pulsed magnetic field (50 Hz, 1 mT) therefore had a negative effect on the peripheral nerve as the amplitude and hyperpolarization phase of its action potential were reduced.
In other words, pulsed magnetic therapy significantly reduces nerve impulses of sciatic nerve and thus relieves severe pain caused by inflammation of the sciatic nerve.
