Treatment of Acute Lower Limb Ischemia
Treatment of acute lower limb ischemia and diabetes with the help of low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy (15 Hz, 1.2 mT) was studied on an animal model by research team of Y. Pan (2013).
Lower limb ischemia is a major problem in diabetic patients as a consequence of poor neovascularization.
Previous studies have shown that low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy can promote growth and renewal of blood vessels in ischemic lesions.
This study, however, addressed the question of whether pulsed magnetic field therapy would have similar therapeutic effects on patients suffering with both limb ischemia and diabetes.
The results confirmed that low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy improves blood circulation and formation of new blood vessels in patients with acute ischemia of lower extremities. This is due to a positive effect of pulsed electromagnetic fields on fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2).
Pulsed electromagnetic therapy might therefore be invaluable in treatment of diabetic patients suffering with ischemic limb impairments.
