Limitation of chronic pain in musculoskeletal system through the effects of low-frequency pulsed magnetic field was the subject of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study (Thomas et al., 2007) published in the Canadian scientific journal.

A total of 50 patients with either extensive chronic pain caused by central nervous system disorders (fibromyalgia), or chronic musculoskeletal and inflammatory pain and stiffness in muscles and connective tissues participated in this research. 24 patients were assigned to the experimental group and the remaining 26 to the control group. Pulsed magnetic therapy was applied 40 minutes twice a day for one week.

Overall, the experimental group showed significantly better results compared to the placebo group. Their pain started to alleviate on the first day and decreased on average by 24% after seven days.

Pulsed magnetic therapy with its analgesic effect is thus suitable for not only the treatment of chronic peripheral pain of musculoskeletal system, but also for the treatment of extensive chronic pain caused by central nervous system disorders.

Low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy proved to be most effective in patients suffering with fibromyalgia.
