Characteristics of Hip Joint Replacement and its Indications

Hip joint replacement (endoprosthesis) is the replacement of a hip joint damaged by wear and tear or injury for an artificial joint. Most frequently, the artificial joint is from a combination of metal and plastic. The first artificial hip joints were used in 1950s.

The most frequently replaced joint is the hip joint. Knee joint is second most replaced (about a half of the number of hip joint replacements). Replacement of other joints is in development as well – shoulder, elbow, ankle, and also finger joints.
