Enhancing the immunity and protection of human body was the subject of a study (Real et al., 2006) that attempted to stimulate white blood cells with pulsed magnetic field of 50 Hz frequency and 1 mT intensity.

Results revealed that pulsed magnetic therapy increases levels of MCP-1 (monocyte chemoatractant protein 1). This protein attracts monocytes (a type of white blood cell) into the arterial wall. MCP-1 is also one of the key chemokines that regulate the migration and infiltration of monocytes and macrophages into tissue.

In other words, monocytes – after the formation in bone marrow and about 8 hours in the blood – enters the tissue thanks to MCP-1. In the tissue, this monocyte is then transformed into macrophage; and cell of natural immunity is born.

This migration and infiltration of monocytes from the blood stream through vascular endothelium is necessary for routine immunological surveillance of tissues and also for proper responses to inflammation.

The results of this study thus indicate that pulsed magnetic field with a frequency of 50 Hz and 1 mT intensity increases immune protection and promotes tissue regeneration.
