Efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in tinnitus was evaluated using the SPECT neuroimaging method, otherwise known as single photon emission computed tomography. The study involved 20 patients.
For comparison, this neuroimaging was performed in twenty patients 14 days prior to the commencement of the therapy and then shortly after its completion.
Results of neuroimaging showed decreased metabolic activity in the lower left temporal lobe (primary auditory cortex), specifically in the areas responsible for visual pattern recognition, visual memory, and also to a lesser extent for audio-visual integration.
These results therefore suggest that the improvement of the condition in patients diagnosed with tinnitus is directly related to the magnetic stimulation of brain’s audio-visual integration mechanisms. This assumption is also supported by the fact that audio-visual trainings are well-known therapeutic strategies for tinnitus.
In the main group, significant improvement was recorded after just five applications of pulsed magnetic therapy with the frequency of 1 Hz, and the effect has lasted for up to six months from the completion of the treatment.
