Bone loss induced by diabetes was dealt with on an animal model by the research team of J. Zhou with the help of low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy with 8 Hz frequency and 3.8 mT intensity. The results of his study were published in the scientific journal Endocrine in 2015.

Diabetes mellitus is an increasingly prevalent disease, which causes a number of side issues such as osteopenia, which is an accelerated loss of bone mass. Hence, this study examined, based on the evidence of positive effects of pulsed magnetic fields on bone metabolism, whether low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy could prevent diabetic bone loss.

The results showed that low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy affects the levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and bone mineral density. It is also able to reverse damaged microarchitecture and strength of the bone.

The study suggests clinical application of low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy in treatment of diabetic osteopenia.
